[[šŸŽ¬ The Farewell]] follows protagonist Billi Wang. Billi's family moved from China to America when she was a child. The story quickly kicks off when Billi's grandmother is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and is expected to have only a few months left to live. Her family decides to hide the diagnosis from Billi's grandmother. Whereas Billi grew up in America and disagrees with this decision, her mother explains it by sharing a Chinese saying:[^JianTheFarewell] > When people get cancer, they die. The family believes that the psychological weight of the cancer will not only create anxiety that prevents her remaining time from being peaceful, but also that it can actually accelerate her death. The family opts not to tell Billi's grandmother because they see it as their duty to bear that psychological weight themselves--taking it off Billi's grandmother so that she can live the rest of her life peacefully.
