It’s a total fail on the part of Wikipedia, since it doesn’t really make for a representative blackout, but you can easily get around the blackout. (I support their cause, but I’m posting this anyways because I figured it could be time sensitive for people, and this will be circulating around pretty quickly anyways).

When you search for an article on Wikipedia, if you press the ESC button (the stop button) in your browser right before the page finishes loading, Wikipedia will allow you access…

Happy browsing! But don’t forget to research SOPA/PIPA in the process…

  1. Did you know you can still access wikipedia normally on your phone? Epic fail…

  2. Wikipedia specifically stated that that completely blacking out the website was not the ultimate goal. Raising awareness is. Considering every single person who visited Wikipedia during the last day has now seen their cause, I’d say they were pretty effective.

    • I learned that early this morning myself. Considering that, I wouldn’t say it’s fail. However, I thought their goal was something else. Although the raising awareness is good, I think a full on black out would have been better. I think pissed off people would be more inclined to take action on SOPA than those who simply read a warning sign before going about their days as normal.

  3. From the BBC:

After a 24-hour blackout, Wikipedia has returned to full working order but declared: “We’re not done yet.”

The site had blocked its content for 24 hours in protest at proposed anti-piracy legislation in the US.

The encyclopaedia said the site had been viewed 162 million times, with eight million people following instructions to contact politicians.

The protest led to eight US lawmakers withdrawing their support for the proposed bills.

Two of the bill’s co-sponsors, Marco Rubio from Florida and Roy Blunt from Missouri, are among those who have withdrawn their support after “legitimate concerns”.

  4. Well I’m just glad that SOPA appears to have been shot down for the time being and we won’t have to carry out the rest our existence without Wikipedia! Phew. Megavideo remains a casualty of the war on piracy though, and many file sharing websites have been spurred into reviewing their policies. I wonder where all this is headed….

    • I’m also glad SOPA took a hit in all this.

I am against piracy, though, so I am also quite pleased that some of those other websites also took hits in this…
